The Young Women's Breast Cancer Movement, 40 and under, Rethink Breast Cancer offers age-appropriate support and resources for young women with breast cancer that are specifically useful to that age group. They have a fantastic blog called Cancer Fabulous Diaries that is very helpful and relevant.
The Ruby Study
Approximately 5.4% of breast cancer cases in Canada occur before the age of 40. The relatively poor prognosis of young women with very early-onset breast cancer suggests that women diagnosed before the age of 40 may benefit from different treatments compared to older women. The RUBY study is being conducted by a Canadian network of breast cancer researchers and surgeons, and it will include 1,200 young breast cancer patients diagnosed before the age of 40.Who can participate in RUBY?
Women newly diagnosed with breast cancer will be eligible to participate if they are
- diagnosed with invasive or ductal carcinoma in-situ disease;
- aged 18 – 40 at the time of diagnosis; and
- able to provide written informed consent and complete questionnaires in English or French.
Please note all enrolment must be done through a RUBY participating surgeon. In our local area that Surgeon is Dr. Nicole Hodgson, Juravinski Cancer Centre.

Fertile Future is a Canadian national non-profit organization that provides fertility preservation information and support services to cancer patients and oncology professionals. Each year, an estimated 10,000 young Canadians face a cancer diagnosis. Approximately 8,000 of them will win this battle. Without knowing the importance of fertility preservation prior to their treatment, many are left infertile with few options. Fertile Future aspires to change this reality for cancer patients. Our mission is to inform, educate and support cancer patients who are facing fertility-risking medical treatment, and oncology professionals who are providing this care.
